Discovering AI's Hidden Costs

🚨 Wait, how much does it cost!?

For the past two years, the narrative has been simple: AI increases productivity and reduces cost. Some organizations have taken this so literally, they laid off substantial amounts of their workforce, on the unfounded promise of 10%, 20% or even 30% efficiency.

It seems, the rude awakening is finally upon all too many. From articles, studies and recent disclosures from large corporations, it's clear that there are hidden costs of AI that can sneak up on you fast. It’s a conversation that I’ve been having ever more frequently, particularly as a critical element of a good AI strategy and governance.

I’ve put some of my thoughts and insights from my research together in this article. It’s a bit of a condensed overview of what I’ve discovered on AI’s hidden costs, what/where they are hiding and what to keep in mind to avoid surprises.
